Full Pitched Roof Replacement
South Wales Fire & Rescue Service needed a full pitched-roof replacement at Abergavenny Fire Station on Hereford Road. The existing covering had reached the end of its life, yet the station had to stay fully operational at all times so there was no impact on emergency response. TRS delivered a complete replacement using the Garland R-MER TILE ST system in traditional terracotta, upgraded the ceiling-level insulation to current Building Regulations, fitted new black PVC fascias, soffits and rainwater goods, and installed a non-penetrative rail system ready for the solar array.

The Challenge
The fire station could not close or reduce readiness at any point. The old ceiling-level insulation needed to be brought up to current regulations, the new lighter roof system required a structural check of the wall plate, and the solar brackets had to be installed at the same time as the tiles because they cannot be added later without compromising the waterproofing. The client also wanted a robust single-point guarantee covering both materials and workmanship.
The Solution
We installed the Garland R-MER TILE ST stone-coated steel tile system in traditional terracotta to match the existing appearance. The system is durable, low-maintenance and accepts a non-penetrative solar rail without penetrating the waterproof layer. Our most experienced installation team delivered the project from start to finish.
What we did
- Stripped the existing covering, battens and insulation back to the timber rafters
- Made good any defective timber or masonry at the verges
- Fitted a Viking breather membrane between the rafters and tiling battens, sealed with tape
- Fixed 25 × 50 mm treated timber counter-battens at the correct centres
- Installed 300 mm glass-fibre insulation at ceiling level
- Laid Garland R-MER TILE ST Traditional tiles in terracotta, broken bond pattern
- Fitted new black PVC fascias, soffits and rainwater goods throughout
- Installed the non-penetrative solar rail system with brackets fixed during the tiling works
Keeping the station operational
The entire programme was planned so the fire station remained on full operational status every day. Work areas were carefully isolated, night seals were maintained, and access routes for emergency vehicles were kept clear. Regular on-site meetings with the client and Garland kept quality and programme under control.
