Failing existing coverings. Old profiled metal sheets had lost their protective coating. Bare steel was corroding, fixings had backed out and water was entering the buildings. The flat roof areas were also at the end of their serviceable life.

High pitch and complex detailing. Several roofs had a very steep pitch combined with numerous hips, valleys, changes in direction and detailed junctions. These geometries demand precise setting-out and accurate weathering at every detail.

Thermal performance. Existing insulation was well below current standards. The new systems needed to deliver a significant U-value improvement while remaining practical on the existing structures.

Multiple blocks, one programme. Three distinct pitched blocks — Science, Humanities and Nursery — plus substantial flat roof areas had to be coordinated as a single coherent project.

TRS installed Garland R-MER LOC on the pitched roofs. This cold-roof metal system with transverse timber lathing provided a robust, long-life covering capable of handling the steep pitches and intricate detailing while giving a clean modern appearance.

Flat roof sections were refurbished with the Garland StressPly Signature bituminous waterproofing system, delivering a high-performance fully bonded solution with excellent detailing at upstands, outlets and penetrations.

Both systems were installed under Garland technical oversight, with regular site inspections to maintain quality and ensure compliance with the specifications.

Buildings stayed in full use. The safety of staff and pupils was the top priority every day, and access, noise, dust and temporary weatherproofing were tightly controlled.

Works were sequenced around the school calendar so teaching and day-to-day activity continued without disruption.
